That's me........6:00 AM on July 2, 2006........leaving Cedar Ridge and heading for Toronto! I figured this last blog would be filled with all the positive changes in me, like how brave I've become...chasing trigger fish, swimming in the ocean, fearlessly riding up front in a dinghy, braving gale force wind and rain storms without a murmur, becoming queen of the squirrel chasers; or it would cover how nice and tolerant I've become around children and how ready I am to conquer the rest of the world! The truth is........relationships are more important and leaving people I've grown to love in one world (even though I'm leaving with Anne-Marie and Eph, the two I love the most) to explore another is really hard. So many were special to me this past year: the whole Newton clan, Nate, the Luetjes, Tim, the Rubins, GiGi & LuLu, Leslie & Bill, Aylin & Raymond, B & K....wow! What a year! But hey! I may be only 3 in people years, but I'm 21 in dog years and I'm ready to step out and rock!!!! TORONTO HERE I COME!!!! Because of dear, sweet Choppin (Frank Hankin's mother) my plane trip to Georgia was a little less stressful! Choppin met us at the Fort Pierce Airport and flew the rest of the way with us! At 97 years old, she holds the record for a N59045 passenger!!

Cruisers' dog missing since 9:00 P.M. last night, found on Green Turtle Cay!

According to the Captain of the sailing vessel Zancada, he and the 1st Mate left in their dinghy at 6:00 P.M. for a Birthday dinner with friends. The dog, known as Suki, was in the cockpit when they motored away. Upon returning at 9:00 P.M., they discovered that Poochimus Maximus was NOT on board! After transmitting an all-points alert on the VHF radio, each took off searching the island. No luck. The Captain returned to find the 1st Mate in tears, listening to Happy Birthday messages on the satellite phone. They made two more trips, hitting all the night spots in New Plymouth, before returning to Zancada for a fitful night's sleep.

Eye-witness #1: After B & K left the boat, Suki was pacing the deck mournfully crying. She then jumped ship and joined a Happy Hour dock party, thoroughly enjoying the attention she was getting.

Eye-witness #2: She was a good girl.........didn't drink too much!!

After that, all accounts are blurry.

At 8:00 A.M. this morning she was spotted by B & K on the next dock with two Chocolate Labs and their owners.

Suki's Story: The boat was so close to the dock - one small step..........and the people were sooooo friendly. They felt my pain.....being left alone with a birthday party going on! I was intending to head back after the party, but then, Neko and Neka came running by. Great dogs!!!! Look like Chocolate Labs. I followed them up the hill to their house. What a great time! Their owners, Yvonne and Alex, were wonderful to me!!!! They knew by my tag that I was a lost boat dog. So they fed me and let me sleep on their sofa! Every once in a while I could hear whistling and they'd let me out. I just didn't know where B & K were. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) At least I felt secure spending the night there! Now I'm somewhat of a Black Sound Marina celebrity!

REAL Dogs Chase Trigger Fish!

OK folks, the research has been completed and the findings published.....real dogs chase Trigger fish! What a day this has been! Bobarino pole fished in the Crab Cay Inlet while K and I beached it on the southern side of Crab Cay. After the usual crab and curly-tailed lizard chases I noticed a fin that looked like a tailing bone fish. Well, it was a a Trigger fish in the shallows looking for food. I started chasing it and pretty soon I was SWIMMING after it! What a BLAST!!!!!! K couldn't believe it was ME, Suki, showing such moxie! I drove that bugger right out of the bay!

We then dinghied across the Sea of Abaco to a great beach on the east side of Great Abaco Island. On the way back to Zancada a dolphin swam along side the dinghy, not two feet from us! I had smelled it ahead of time and when it finally surfaced, it was all I could do to keep from swimming with it! (Actually, K had me by the collar!) It wasn't even phased by my screech-cry-bark! Like I said.....what a day!

Almost Time for the Back Again Post............

But not yet!!!! After 3 boring days in Marsh Harbor we're back in Manjack! I could smell the beach, the crabs, and the super sailor friends I've made as we sailed around the Whale, past Green Turtle Cay and on to our favorite anchorage! What a day! After lunch we went to visit Aylin & Raymond on JP. They had lots of crumbs I could clean up and nice comfortable carpet on which to take a nap. While zipping over the ocean in the dinghy this afternoon I saw my first Barracuda! It was jumping out of the water while chasing some smaller fish that were also sailing out of the water and swimming for their lives! K grabbed my collar to keep me from taking chase. PLEEEEEZE.........give me some credit! Why would I get into the water with a Barracuda????? Have you seen the teeth on those things? Tomorrow we're going for a walk on the beach and picnic lunch with LuLu and GiGi. They're leaving with the first good weather window. Things are going to get a little wheepy around here with my friends sailing off......two by two! Time for some sleep! Sorry no pics............

It's Not All Sunshine and Sand Castles!

This AM we awoke to 40+ knots and driving rain while anchored in White Sound, Green Turtle Cay. Yes, I was dejected (not nervous or uptight....being a true salt!), just distraught knowing my walk was on an indefinite hold. But Bobarino braved the rain and took me in when the winds died down. He was the hero of the White Sound dog world as he shamed the other pooch owners into dinghying to shore!

No pictures to prove it, but I went for my first kayak ride.......not a bad experience....for ME. K would probably take me out regularly, but I get in the way of the paddle!

No pictures to prove this either, but I now dive off the dinghy and swim to the beach. Bumped into a trigger fish on one of my dives and it scared the pazookies out of me! I thought it was a shark!

It's hard to believe, but the other day I got tired of chasing crabs, went over to K's backpack, curled up in the shade, and took a nap. All the while she was searching for me in my favorite beach hangouts. OK, I cannot tell a lie! The truth is I was so busy that when she walked on down the beach I lost her!

Ephy...I need my nails clipped...it's time for you guys to come home!!

This is what it looks like on a calm day! We rounded the Whale last night about 6:00 PM. and anchored off Manjack as dark closed in. I was so excited to see LuLu and GiGi that I jumped into their dinghy and gave them big sloppy licks! Today.......the beach!!

Yes, it's a Halti collar. Due to certain misbehaviors on my part, my life has a few new restrictions. At the Rubins it's the zip line. At Bobarino's it's a staked line. For leashed walks it's this collar. OK, I dug a hole under the Rubin's fence so big that neighborhood dogs now come and go whenever they please......and where am I? Ziplined to a tree watching them! The last straw in Georgia was when I took off at 11:00 P.M. K & B were ready for bed and had to go find me. Then back here in Birmingham, I pulled Christopher by the leash into the street. The Halti training manual says a dog like me is a "menace and a frustration!" A menace and a frustration! That's a mouthful of hogwash! Anne-Marie & Eph, how many more days until you come home????

My Life Has Gone From Bad to Worse

B is fishing with a couple friends in the Bahamas.......and he didn't take me. That was just the beginning. This AM K fed me, let me outside, and poured herself a bowl of cereal. She then checked on me..........I was gone.........for over an hour. She found me frolicking with that crazy dog from across the street. Back to bed. This afternoon she let me out while she was working in her garden and I stayed in the yard..........well.........until about 5:00 PM. She called and looked for me everywhere. I heard her, but ignored her and hid behind the Winsteads's house. When she went up on the road she saw something dark lying in the middle of the street down toward Campground Rd. She went tearing down there, only to find a pair of girl's bib overalls with a big Sponge Bob picture on them. Probably that crazy dog hauled them from someone's backyard.....just like he picked up Katerina's bike helmet. I thought I was safe until I started to bark at Wayne, the UPS man in the Winstead's driveway. She heard me. Instead of sending me to bed, she tied me to the front porch while she worked in her garden. I tried my pitiful half-bark. She ignored me. Then I tried my agonized crying.......continual crying until she went in at 7:30. She ignored me. It was DARK and I was still on that porch. She let me in and I disappeared. I didn't even want to eat. Maybe when she's asleep I'll sneak in and sleep on my pillow. It looks like it's going to be a zip line for me.....even to go out for a leak.

Big Trouble......I'm in big trouble!

Two hours.......that's all. I was only roaming around the neighborhood for two hours. It's too bad B & K will never know where I've been. There were dogs barking all over the place while B was out trying to track me down. K was at home sure I'd be dead if I'd gotten under the fence and into the Stapleton's dog pen. (I'm not THAT dumb!) Trying to casually cross the yard as if I'd been there the whole time didn't work. I've been sent to bed without supper. The pits....that's what it is.

Now that I think about it, the last two days have not been two of my best. We went for a walk down by Shoal Creek yesterday and I found out that Georgia red clay is a lot slicker than Abaco sand! I was tearing down the side of the creek and all of a sudden I was in the water, swimming against the current and trying to get to land.....any land! Finally, relieved, I climbed ashore.......only to find I was on an island. That meant swimming back to the other side. Bobarino thought it was pretty funny. K was just glad to see me back on their side of the water! So ends another adventure!

Two days before B was going to fly over to Palm Beach and pick up A-M & E we had unbelievable weather.......winds starting at 30-40 knots out of the SSW clocking around to the W and finally blowing 40-50 knots out of the NNE with squalls and lots of rocking and rolling! The bow sprit was under water in some of the rocking......and yes....I passed the test!!!! One brave dog! Now, this may not seem like a big deal to those of you unfamiliar with the Abacos....happening before their arrival; BUT, in order to get to B's airplane in Marsh Harbor, we had to ocean sail around this island called Whale Cay...notorious for dangerous waves/currents in northerly winds.....and The Whale was up! As the sun set the next evening.....The Whale was still up......I know......we went out for a look.......a close look until K screamed, "Turn around before we get ourselves killed!"

By sunrise the next day it was down enough for us to get around and we sailed on to Marsh, anchored, and Bobarino was on his way!

We were all in Marsh together, in Hope Town together, and now back up here in Manjack where A-M & Eph got to meet my friends GiGi & LuLu and Leslie & Bill! And..........Anne-Marie got her piece (or two) of Vernon's Key Lime pie!

Distraught is the right word for it. I got up and K was PACKING.....throwing things into the cooler and a bag. Now where are we going???? Well, it wasn't "we"....it was Katharina. I had to stay behind (on the boat) with Bobarino for two days while K went home to GA. Thus, the absence of blogs, photos, regular meals, etc., etc, etc. Things are back to normal now and, when I can discuss it, I'll tell you about incident #3......another unplanned swim in the Sea of Abaco! Yes, K was in GA at the time.

My Fake Birthday Dinner

For my fake birthday Bobarino speared me a 3 lb. Grouper! Nasty smelling until it's cooked. OK....I cannot tell a lie....the fish was for K's Valentine dinner. She brought home one of Vernon's Key Lime pies and they had a feast. I got an extra ration of dog food.
Now, on an entirely different subject. It has been brought to my attention by my human cousin Justyna (who happens to be an accomplished dancer...modern, jazz, ballet....for real!!) that I should ad some choreographed dance routines to my musical performances. Those of you who know me well....what do you think??? I'm a lover not a fighter, and a fast mover...but can I dance???

We left Lake Worth Inlet at 4:30 AM........yes it was this dark! Once we got out, just past the last sea buoy I could smell them....they were all over the place...and then they started jumping out of the water! Whoaa, that was a nice school of dolphins!!

The crossing was uneventful, nice wind, and not too choppy. After anchoring in Great Sale at 9:15 PM, B took me to shore...an experience I don't want to talk about.....especially after an incident at the Riviera Beach Marina dock the night before. Let's just say I had two unplanned swimming adventures.

The rainy day was yesterday, anchored in Lake Worth, Fl.....about an hour north of the inlet. K thought the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was cool.....I don't think I even saw it. The tug was our neighbor at the Riveria Beach Marina....too big to bark at! Looks like tomorrow PM might be a go. We'll see! If you don't hear from me for a while, that's why!

We're getting closer to the Bahamas.....tomorrow West Palm and Thursday the crossing!!!!! Ist photo: another vet exam.....supposed to be 48 hrs before entering the country. 1/19 just won't cut it. 2nd photo: I'm exhausted....totally exhausted after a day watching dolphins. I've smelled them before.....but never seen them until today. There was one that swam along side the boat for nearly a mile. It would surface, dive, surface, dive.......3 feet from my nose....how cool!!! So now, I'm totaled. Sweet dreams!

The boy walked past me with his Sheltie. I sprang, barked, and snapped at it. It was over in less than half a second because I was tethered to the marina office bench. When I reached the end of my leash it jerked me back and I went flying in the opposite direction. That's it....all there was to it. Does that sound like enough to warrant such a reputation????? After that the Grandma walked the
Sheltie who yapped and barked at me every time it saw me. I was ready to get out of there! The above photo was actually taken after my last night's jaunt on an island south of Melbourne.

They look harmless....beautiful lines, graceful as they soar through the air.....regal on their perches. SORRY - not these birds! The ospreys are the worst.....just plain killing machines. They swoop down, nab fish, behead them on the deck, and swallow before I can get below. They scare me to death! The others are just plain disgusting with the messes they make. After the foul fowl used the big Z as a giant roost, it took K&B three hours to clean, scrape, and brush a path down the deck to the companionway. I couldn't even get onboard until sundown.......had to nap on the dock with one eye open toward the skies.

Wouldn't you be? I've been left again! On top of that, my business venture has come to an abrupt halt since I'll more than likely be CRATED when K & B leave the house. And that carpet.....that moth-eaten piece of carpet near the back door.......isn't worth replacing. It's hard to tell which hole is mine! After K sews the pieces back only an expert will notice. So what's the big deal? Once again, I'm the one suffering.

Well, maybe it's too early to use the word reformed......but, seriously, NOTHING was chewed up..no hidden goodies anywhere. I already blew my chances for a good home with the Rubins.....I've got to be on my best behavior.....at least for awhile!
Last night we watched a 93% fresh (according to Rotten Tomatoes) movie on Bobarino's favorite channel.....Raising Arizona.......it was so bad....screaming and yelling and carrying on.....that I barfed my dinner.....all in a nice neat pile right in front of the TV and left the room. We're going to try again tonight with a 100% fresh. I'll let you know how it goes. Maybe I should start my own movie review web site.

My newest squirrel watching stance......I could easily fall asleep like this! Last night was momentous.....not exactly for me, but I was the reason. I passed the test!!! Left home alone (free range of the house...the whole house) I didn't chew up anything! It was like the night I was christened a seaworthy hound all over again. Such excitement I've never seen.....yadda, yadda, yadda. It doesn't take much to make some people happy!

Had a great Thanksgiving with the Rubins, Fresno, B & K, their friend Richard Marceau, and his dog Neige. B & K met Richard while climbing the Harding Ice Field in Alaska a couple summers ago. He's a French Canadian from Quebec City who has been visiting the US National Parks. Neige is a sweet natured American Husky........I wish I'd been nicer to her.....don't know what got into me......I snapped and yiped and was totally rude.......guess I'm a control freak. She and Fres had fun running and chasing together!

When K, B, and the kids took Richard to visit the Little White House , we dogs had to stay in the van by ourselves. We did fine......notice who is in the driver's seat! By Saturday A.M. I was getting along with Neige...but then she had to leave.

What is it????!! Take a guess.....a wild guess! Hint: It's not an herb garden. What was I thinking? Why didn't I see this coming? There is always method to their madness.....the hotdog trick all over again! We were anchored near Southport, NC.....an old, picture-perfect, little town steeped in both Revolutionary and Civil War history. On our walk, B&K didn't even slow down at the Maritime Museum. They went to an automotive supply store and bought this green plastic oil change pan. B filled it with dirt. Then dug up some sod behind an abandoned building and planted it, before hauling the whole thing back to the boat. Early Saturday morning we sailed away. The swamp was better than this! My own porta-potty! (A-M......you did tell them I favored long grass!) Seventeen and a half hours later....at 1:30 AM I couldn't wait any longer and used it! So much excitement I've never seen! I was christened a seaworthy hound! So went my first ocean voyage.....Southport, NC to Charleston, SC.....28 hours, start to finish! As an aside.....suffering from sleep deprivation, I missed the dinghy when I jumped in for a ride to shore. It's a good thing B was right there to catch hold of me...only my lower half got wet!
